A Breath of Mercy

by m. e. roach

i have seen

so many things

i am

sixteen going on one hundred

a yellow city

calling to me

in the wind

in the rain

in the storm

a beggar’s hand

dirty and worn

crying

for mercy-

mercy in a bite of food.

the wind rushes

the yellow city flows

a rush of energy

flying by the beggar

blindly disdaining

he calls to me-

empty eyes

beggar’s eyes

Christ’s eyes

pleading for mercy-

mercy in a bite of food.
